Elephants are known for their excellent memory, symbolizing the need to remember grammar rules and vast vocabularies to give an impression of a skilled writer to the examiner in the English Language Board Examination
-> Our tips and advice for ENGLISH LANGUAGE (0500) paper 1-:
To start off, the main tip we can give you is, to start early. People who start practicing papers early in 10th grade usually end up scoring numerous a stars. We cannot stress this enough, start today.
For the summary question, pay close attention to the word limit that is mentioned (120 words) as the whole point of a summary is to fit the ideas mentioned in the insert in a clear, concise, and quick manner. Make sure that you do not end up writing something that is not in the insert as that will be penalized.
To write better writer's effect and even all of the answers, you should have a wide range of vocabulary which you can enhance by regularly reading English magazines as well as using apps like 'Merriam Webster' which upload a word of the day and help passively increase your vocab.
Another thing that is important in the writer's effect is that you should use emotive words and adjectives that correctly convey the meaning of the effect it has on your mind.
Practice analyzing 4 layers of a writer's effect. For that you can use the LICE method, which means L= literal meaning of the quote, I= implied meaning of the quote, C= connotation (further implied meaning), and lastly E= effect.
Moving on, when approaching the 3rd question, pay attention to your style. By your style, I mean that you should follow the specific formats (provided below) and write a structured, neat, and clean answer.
When writing, it's important to consider the tone you use for each question and adjust it accordingly. To truly embody the character you're writing for, it's essential to keep their gender, age, position, and role in mind while crafting your words. By doing so, you'll be able to create a more compelling narrative that captures the essence of your character.
Pay close attention if the directed writing hints you to use an informal or a formal tone as it will be marked. (a newspaper report will be formal whereas a letter to your friend would be informal)
Make sure to address the bullet points chronologically and equally.
It is crucial to consider timing while writing a paper. You should plan your work so that you have enough time to finish it and go through it again before submitting it. To develop your timing skills, it is recommended to practice timed past papers at home. This will enable you to get a better sense of how much time you need to allocate for each section of the paper, and how to pace yourself throughout the writing process.
Another general tip I would like to give you is to use highlighters (not in the exam), but when you are practicing at home as it will allow you to identify and lock points that are related to specific bullet points.
Write your answers and get them marked by your teachers to know where you generally make mistakes and aim to not make them again.
One thing my teacher used to say is that 'content>flowery language'. This is true because if you use simple language and can directly convey your thoughts, that's far better than using a complicated word which can change the implied meaning.
Go through the example candidate responses + specimen paper answers to get an idea of how to write an effective answer.
Lastly, DO NOT UNDERSTIMATE ENGLISH. We know you have multiple boards at the same time however, spend an equitable amount of time practicing papers and reviewing your mistakes as it is an easy A* if you are consistent.
